Photo Lou Beaumont ABN ΔΆ Local News & Meeting calls for Roundhouse rethink Eve Jeffery A meeting held on Monday last week at the Ocean Shores Country Club showed that many in the local community are against the council sale of the Roundhouse site on Orana Road for house blocks. The turnout for the day was far and beyond the expectations of organisers and the event, after one run, has stamped itself as another great event on the Brunswick Heads calendar. Hundreds settled in around the Soundshell after the races to enjoy a huge program of events which included free SUP lessons, entertainment, expert kayak advice, water safety and rescue demonstrations, water squirting fun, a rowing challenge and the all important Lucky Duck Race. Second and third in the section were Gavin Smith and Jay Gates and first woman over the line was also a SUP rider, Simone Horsefield. It was only another few minutes before the Stand Up Paddle (SUP) division had their inaugural champ, Dale Chapman, who had to duck to get under the bridge. Kurt was first under the road bridge after 45 minutes on the water, only a second before runners-up Alex Burns followed by brother Tom Burns. GoSeaKayak s Kurt Tutt from Byron Bay was first over the line and will go down in history as the first Mullum to Bruns River King. The places were very tight with less than a few seconds between them. Once the board riders had completed their event, it was a tense wait for the winners in the Paddle Challenge and the Stand Up Paddle Challenge. He was followed closely by runner up Ela Heiniger, 13, from the Bruns SLSC. ![]() Line honours went to 14 year old Josh Brown from the Byron SLSC who was first home in the SLSC Board Challenge from Ferry Reserve. Conditions were perfect on the river with the outgoing tide and the run up to the road bridge calm yet competitive for those with the energy to give it all they had. See more photos at Story & photos Eve Jeffery The weather gods were smiling on Brunswick Heads once again on Sunday when over 380 people paddled boards, canoes, kayaks and boats in the inaugural Mullum to Bruns Paddle. Kurt Tutt, below, was all smiles after the race as winner (and donor) of the first prize money, which he passed along to runner-up Alex Burns, who in turn donated half to the charities of the day. Line honours in the inaugural Mullum to Bruns Paddle went to Josh Brown, above, from the Byron SLSC who came first in the board paddle from the Ferry Reserve caravan park. Mr Corbin said that the tree in the centre of the area will remain. The current small triangular traffic divider will be replaced with a roundabout similar in size to that at the western side if the Tyagarah interchange. The most noticeable change for the immediate future will be the upgrading of the island at the western end of Argyle Street near Milk and Honey Pizza. The building site will commence with the removal of grasses and the installation of necessary underground services. Mr Corbin said that the work would begin on the road and the building site at the same time, with the road having swale and kerb and guttering installed, along with stormwater drainage and a footpath.
